I have always assumed, from my high school history classes, that a majority of Holocaust deaths were from death camps and concentration camps. But I've recently been told that most of the deaths were from roving death squads.
I'm just curious to know the rough breakdown of the means of death. More detailed information is nice, but any insight will do.
It is generally estimated by Raul Hilberg that the Einsatzgruppen (the roving death squads) killed from 1941 to 1945 about 2 million people, 1.3 million of them Jews.
Between July 1942 and October 1943, the Nazis killed at least 1.7 million people in the Aktion Reinhard camps and an additional 320.000 at Kulmhof.
The rest of the killings were spread between various camps and other methods of killings (the Wehrmacht in Serbia e.g.) with Auschwitz-Birkenau and Majdanek alone accounting for another 1.3 million deaths.
