The Spanish and Portuguese did try to use the local populations at first but the same problems that affected Native Americans in the north affected the populations in South and Central America with disease killing large numbers of them. The African population did not have this same problem and so the already centuries old slave trade started booming as the need for labor for the plantations increased.
