I know there are all the stories like Adam and Eve about people who lived a long time ago, but who can we prove actually existed? From a non-historical perspective I would imagine it would be an Egyptian Pharoah, but are there any older?
The earliest person in the history of the Chinese dynasties who has been confirmed by contemporary records was Wu Ding of the Shang dynasty. His reign lasted from mid 13th to early 12th century BC. That does however not make him even the Chinese ruler most removed from us in history. That would have been Yu, founder of the Xia dynasty[1]. He supposedly lived in the 22nd or 23rd century BC. However, his actual existence outside of mythology is highly debatable.
Gilgamesh of the famous Akkadian Epic of Gilgamesh on the other hand is generally regarded by scholars to have been a historical figure. He would have been a Sumeran king who ruled in the 26th century BC. Even if Gilgamesh had been just mythical figure, King Enmebaragesi of Kish, who is mentioned in the Epos, was not, as his name was found on artifacts at Nippur. He would have lived in the 27th century BC[2]. None of them, however, would have been the person most removed from us in history.
The first pharaoh of the First Dynasty of early Egypt is known to have had the name Narmer. He reigned during the 31st century BC. But there were others before even him: The serekh or crest of a predynastic pharaoh of Upper Egypt with the name Ka was found on several artifacts within a tomb near Abydos. Ka probably reigned during the first half of the 32nd century BCE[3]. Yet, there was another one before even him.
The person most removed from us in history probably was the predynastic egyptian ruler Iryhor, whose tomb was found close to Ka's and who is believed to have reigned in the early 32nd century[4]. To put this into perspective: Iryhor's name was carried across 5200 years to us, from a time when the Harappan culture in the Indus valley was still in its infancy; when most of Europe, including the Minoan culture, was still in the Stone Age; before Stonehenge was built; before the Maya built permanent agricultural settlements in the region of today's Mexico; before the Norte Chico civilization rose in the region of today's Peru.
