One of the most important factors in blitzkrieg warfare was coordination between infantry, armor, artillery, and air support. Obviously, when looking at history before mechanized warfare, you are automatically eliminating air support, armor, and depending on how far back you go, tanks and artillery. This being said, I think there are some similarities between the use of heavy, mobile forces to create a gap in enemy lines and exploit the penetration in blitzkrieg to the use of heavy calvary. Alexander I's companion cavalry had many of the same strengths as a panzer division; they could use their mobility to out-manuever infantry while having the armor and weaponry to be used as "shock" troops.
