Well, true believers in the US thought that it was. They believed that "communism", "socialism" was based on a flawed perception of human nature, that it would inevitably be outperformed by free market capitalism, and that it would inevitably collapse.

Meanwhile, true believers in the Soviet Union, thought that Marx' analysis of history was correct. Capitalism would inevitably collapse. The victory of the proletariat was a certain outcome of history.

This belief by both sides that they would eventually win if they did nothing, was possibly one of the reasons the Cold War remained cold, rather than turning hot.
