I recall hearing many years ago that Catholic Priests didn't have a broad access to many classical texts because they would be referring to sexual content.

What time period are you thinking of?
Almost all classical texts were preserved through European monasteries, so on a broad and sweeping level this isn't true, but if you are thinking of a more specific time and place then that is something more investigable.
