Is it an accumulation of rubble and building materials from past settlements which are deliberately or incidentally built upon? Was there likely to have been any deliberate advantage-seeking in this or was it more likely to have been unintended? And what's the name for it: tal? Tor? Something like that?
It is because of the layers being built upon previous buildings. I'm not sure if you've ever seen a building torn down to be replaced by a new one, but essentially a vast majority of the small rubble is basically buried beneath the newly laid sod.
