Good translations of Song or Tang Dynasty poetry?

by homu

Maybe "good translation" is an impossible task, are there any translations you would recommend for any Song/Tang Dynasty songs or poetry? Preferably with sufficient annotation and the original text included, as I can read a little Chinese?

The best thing I can suggest might be "How to Read Chinese Poetry: A Guided Anthology" by Zong-Qi Cai. I use this extensively and while it's not exclusive to Song and Tang poetry, it covers all the periods and styles very well. If you're looking for a less detailed but more inclusive collection of poetry translations, check out http://www.chinese-poems.com/ which features lots of Li Bai and Du Fu.

If you're looking for a better understanding of Tang/Song poetry overall, I think that the book Jasfss has recommended will do fine. If certain poets interest you more than others, let me know who they are, and I can pass along a few additional recommendations. Most of the translations I can think of are rather scholarly, so the focus is more on conveying the meaning of the poem, and less on producing a translation that sounds particularly poetic.
