Jewish women, married and unmarried alike, wore long wool skirts with long sleeved shirts tucked into them, often sporting aprons. Here are three different views of immigrant women at the market on Hester Street in 1898 (Hester Street ran down the center of the Jewish quarter): 1, 2, 3. While married women wore scarves to cover their hair (some of them shaved their heads and wore wigs), unmarried women and young girls usually wore their hair pulled back in a bun or plaited, like these Jewish girls seen during a child labor protest in 1909. Over time, as the immigrants became assimilated, they started to adopt American ways of dressing and styling their hair.
