Islam today has less than a 2% following among the population. According to the Encyclopedia of Muslism-American History less than 10 men who fought for the american side of the revolution could be called Muslim (and this is only by name association). it is entirely possible that they did not even practice the religion of Islam.

Since the number was so low it would lead me to conclude that it was not much of a widespread concern. So most people would not have cared or even interacted with a person who practiced that faith.

The concept that Islam was held in greater respect in the early years of the United States often stems from the wording of the Treaty of Tripoli in 1797.
