Was yugoslavia comparable to other eastern states like the GDR or the USSR? Or was it a socialism with more liberal ideas?

Marshall Tito (d. 1980) suppressed ethnic tensions with a dictatorial regime self-identified as Communist but claiming membership with non-aligned nations. Factors propping up the regime were suppression of political dissent, covert aid by the CIA, and cult of personality.
