The bog standard answer is Herodotus. He's at least the first "historian" in any sense we'd recognize. Others had shown interest before him (Egypt even having a rough equivalent to archaeologists), but hes generally regarded as being the first person to attempt to construct a narrative of the past based on things he could claim confidence in by way of a stated method. Which is a rather convoluted way of saying he was the first historian.
