Both North Korea and Ancient Egypt's rulers are and were literally believed to be living Gods, that makes me wonder if government propaganda at the time was similar to what North Korea does today. Is there any evidence of this? Are there tales of Pharaohs who don't go to the bathroom or got 18 whole in ones at their first golf game?
North Koreans on the whole don't literally believe their leaders to be gods. In all the defector stories I've read, I believe one person mentioned believing that when they were a child. Just because the Rodong Sinmun or the Korean Central TV makes some outrageous claim doesn't mean that the populace buys it without question. See Andrei Lankov's The Real North Korea for a discussion on what North Koreans will and will not believe.
That said, North Korea is a closed, Stalinist state surrounded by powerful neighbors. Ancient Egypt was, for a time, the pinnacle of power in the region, possibly the world. There is no comparison to be made of modern Stalinist propaganda and secret police tactics in Northeast Asia and ancient Egypt.
