I would highly recommend Tony Judt's Postwar - A History of Europe Since 1945; it's a general historical work on the post-1945 period. It is comprehensive in its treatment of economic, political, and cultural history. To a lesser degree Judt covers social history, but is a little more biased than I'd like.
