The Democratic Party used a donkey, thanks to 1828 presidential candidate Andrew Jackson. His opponents allegedly called him a jackass, much to his amusement. He then used the donkey in his campaign posters. Cartoonist Thomas Nast in 1878 featured the donkey in one of his strips, which supposedly represented anti war ideology. The public found it to be fitting and became the unofficial symbol for the party
