Armours and weapons develop alongside each other, and so as plate armour was taken onboard, polearms/poleaxes, spears, lances, and maces (as well as crossbows/bows towards guns) were more common. Swords also as a result developed a thinner and pointier blade to better pierce the joints, however were relegated to the role of sidearm.
