I'm interested in books that recount the history of anarchism in Spain, especially the history of Catalonia in regards to the ideology.
I already have Orwell's Homage to Catalonia on my list, but I want something that would be more rigorous than a memoir; something preferably academic--citations and bibliography and such.
What would historians recommend?
Free Women of Spain is a good recommendation from goneforastroll. I'd also recommend Jerome Mintz's oral history, "The Anarchists of Casas Viejas"
Free Women of Spain by Martha Ackelsberg is a great and thorough exploration of the social revolution specifically relating to the emancipation of women. [Here] (https://www.akpress.org/products.html?topics=17) is a bunch of other books on the topic of revolutionary Spain.
If you are looking for works critical of spanish anarchism, I can absolutely recommend Bryan Caplans "Anarcho Statists of Spain". It is an Academic source and is fully referenced. It brings up many of the darker elements of Spanish Anarchism along with many of the contradictions in it. The book is available online for free:
