When people would bind their children's skulls to elongate them did it cause any brain damage? Does the brain conform to the shape or was there an empty cavity? Were their personalities affected and why did they do it to begin with?

I have no specific culture in mind, mainly because I have only heard of this practice in passing or from a few pictures on the internet. Where, by whom and of course WHY was this practiced?
