Was there less casualties due to friendly fire? Did they more, or less, hit their intended targets? Or was it all the same as the ones in WW1?
I would surmise using only a compass and a map would be difficult to use in situations such as a war. So I would like to also know what sort of instruments were used during both world wars.

TL;DR Most of the technology, both in terms of hardware and how to apply it, had been developed by the end of WWI. Indeed, it was primarily the ability for any given gun to hit any given target on the map which broke the deadlock on the western front in WWI. The Germans never caught up with this and lost both wars substantially as a result.
