Tokyo used to be Edo, while Kyoto still exists. Look near Osaka.

Kyoto was the imperial capitol for a thousand years (the name means Capitol City), while the shogunates usually set up a separate capitol. In 1868, at the Meiji Restoration of Imperial rule, the government set up in the biggest city, Edo,taking over the shogunate's bureacracies and building. They then renamed Edo Tokyo (Eastern Capitol) and while the transfer went on even called Kyoto Saikyo (Western Capitol).

So they are very separate places but the names aren't a coincidence.
