During pre-modern times, did famines affect gentry/aristocracy with the same severity as peasantry? Would their diets have changed at all in response to harsh conditions?

Would you mind specifying what you mean by "pre-modern times"? There is quite a bit of ambiguity with this term and I just want to make sure I give you the answer you're looking for.
