I've been reading Captain Corelli's Mandolin recently and was intrigued by the historical context of it (Italian troops fighting against Germans) and was interested in finding out more. So my question is, how many major cases were there of Axis soldiers in WW2 fighting each other, and what the circumstances of them? Would be very interested to discover if there was any major anti-Nazi violence within the Wermacht in particular.

I'd look into the Battle of Castle Itter. It took place at the end of WWII on May 5th, 1945. The castle was a prison for a few VIP's. In a nutshell, a US Army unit liberated it and shortly afterwards, defended the castle against a counterattack made by the SS. They were helped by a band of Wehrmacht soldiers led by Major Josef Gangl. There is a book that covers the lead-up to and the battle itself. It's called "The Last Battle," by Stephen Harding.
