It's an effort, although a somewhat self-defeating one, to avoid ethno- and religio-centrism by switching from explicitly Christian terms such as "Before Christ" and "Anno Domini" to "Before Common Era" and "Common Era". I say self defeating because the same dates, the supposed birth of Christ, are still used to delineate one epoch from another.
