I recently saw a photo that was, according to the photographer, cave art written by a German soldier during WW1; it was "Hell" written in candle soot. Would a German have written "Hell" or "Hölle"?

'Hell' in German means 'light/bright', it seems weird to graffiti that onto a cave but maybe that's what the artist meant as opposed to the underworld?

I cannot answer the question, but I was interested in the photograph: It was taken in 2012 by a photographer named Jeff Gusky. You can see the photograph in this gallery (photo 11) on his website, unfortunately without any further explanation.
