Were attitudes towards communism, in the West, as apprehensive in the early 20th century as they were in the 60s and 70s?

Yes they were. The early 1920s and 1910s had things like the Red Scare(fear of communist uprising in the USA) and Palmer raids(raids by Secretary-General Palmer against these communists). However no actual evidence of a communist uprising was found and it was most likely just fear.
