Goat meat was eaten in the normal UK. Like pig meat is pork and steer meat is beef, goat meat is chevon. Depending on the age of the animal, it is cooked like veal, lamb, beef, or mutton.
Back on the Farm points out that goats are easier to keep for milk than cows, starting with the smaller animal is easier to handle. Now, milch animals have to be freshened every few years - get pregnant and give birth - to keep them from drying up. So every goat-farmer has a steady supply of kids being birthed. Once they have all the does they can manage, kids are just a source of meat, as male kids always were. So goat-farmers and their friends tend to have a steady supply of chevon, war or no war.
