Can anyone recommend a book or article on Argentina before its independence?

I am fluent in both english and spanish (which is my native tongue), so I'm fine with recommendations in either language. Thanks you for answering.

The best source on Argentina is David Rock, Argentina 1516-1987: From Spanish Colonization to Alfonsin (UC Press, 1987).

Here are some books that might be useful for you:

  • Revolución y Guerra: Formación de una élite dirigente en la Argentina criolla which I think is translated and published by Cambridge as Politics, Economics, and Society in Argentina in the Revolutionary Periodby Tulio Halperín Donghi. Although a bit dated, it is a classic.
  • La Argentina colonial: el Río de la Plata entre los siglos XVI y XIX by Raúl Fradkin and Juan Carlos Garavaglia. This might be a good one to start with; it's a quick read.
  • Workshop of Revolution: Plebeian Buenos Aires and the Atlantic World, 1776–1810 by Lyman L. Johnson.
  • The Invention of Argentina by Nicholas Shumway
  • Revolution and Restoration: The Rearrangement of Power in Argentina by Mark D. Szuchman and Jonathan C. Brown.
  • Ciudades, provincias, Estados: Orígenes de la nación argentina by José Chiaramonte.
