Isabell Hull's Absolute Destruction is one I just recently read. It primarily focuses on Germany in South West Africa. Another is Michelle Moyd's Violent Intermediaries which discusses the African soldiers in Germany's East African colony prior to and during World War I.

I like David L. Lewis's Race to Fashoda: Colonialism and African Resistance.
