How, specifically, did Lord Auckland miscalculate the Afghan people/rulers? What lead up to his murder? What were the British goals and how did they go about trying to change power?

I'm afraid I don't have a source, but the person torn to pieces and hung in the bazaar during the Anglo-Afghan war was William Macnaghten, not Lord Auckland. You might get a better response by resubmitting the question. If still no joy, PM me and I'll give you some pointers.
