It just seems like there's little reason for Rome to have used the Eagle over the Wolf as its standard.
I am interested in this answer as well. I have read that in the early republic period the roman's used 5 sigils for their legions: The eagle, wolf, buraq, horse and boar. I also know from Plutarch, Gaius Marius was the general who standardized the Aquila, and discontinued the legionary sigils except for the eagle. My question in follow up to the original, if it is know, why did Marius choose the eagle?
Eagles don't tend to foster other animals.
