I noticed some vague references in the Wikipedia page on the American revolution to the Colonists being offered seats in the British parliament. I've never heard of such a thing, was an offer ever actually made? If so why was it rejected?
This is my first time answering on this subreddit so someone feel free to correct me if i answer in the wrong way. In short no, they were never offered any seats in parliament. This was because the colonies were pretty much autonomous as far as Parliament was concerned. As long as they got their resources from the colonies and other nations didn't they could care less. Unless they passed a law specifically for the colonies (i,e The Navigation Acts) no general laws applied to them. They did send representatives to London to look after their affairs but those representatives didn't really have any influence at all.
