Hello my fellow historians. I am just starting my Senior Thesis for my University and being a lover of ancient history, specifically Rome, I am looking to do my paper on the Gallic War and the impact it had on Caesar's life and Rome. I am looking for any help in finding good sources in regards to this. I have found a couple articles from databases like JSTOR and of course found an English translation of Caesar's writings of the war itself but would appreciate any help you guys/gals can offer. Thank you in advance.
The book I'd recommend is Caesar by Adrian Goldsworthy. The book is a biography and thus relates the story of Caesars entire life, but a good deal of the book is about the Gallic Wars which shaped his life. Not only does it cover the man himself but also allows you to learn enough context to understand the man and the world he lived in. Being that Goldsworthy is a military historian you will see informative descriptions of the battles that took place, the reasoning behind his decisions and so on. Dr. Goldsworthy takes an academic approach to his life in the sense that he writes what we know for certain, what we are unsure of and what may have happened according to different sources, and doesn't devote much space to find out what happened in a scenario where we simply do not know, or will most likely ever know.
I'm sure you'll be able to find able to find the book at your university library, if not it's very much worth a buy at Amazon! I recommend reading the entire book though when you find the time as it's very difficult to put down, and very captivating.
