Why does it seem English has so few diacritical marks compared to other European languages?

by darth_stroyer

I was thinking about this and diacritical marks aren't really used in English unless it's a borrowed word. Spanish, French, German, Polish etc all have diacritical marks and they are used quite a lot. Is there are historic reason for this?
