I'd like to find a good book on that period. Not too boring but also not too simple. I'm interesting in details of building and crafting a whole new country of that period. I like engineering details of that period. Thank you.
I found Bernard Bailyn's The Barbarous Years to be very good. It's a topic that has suffered from heroic myth-making in the past. Bailyn really does make a very good case for the various colonial efforts being far more chaotic, uncertain, badly-conceived, badly-organized. It's a great introduction.
Alan Taylor's 'American Colonies: The Settlement of North America to 1800' is a useful book and goes someway in bypassing all the over-glorified narratives that seem to plague most modern accounts.
Quite harrowing in parts!
