Are there any myths/oral histories/tales that can be traced to 'folk memory' of the Indo-European migrations?

I'm thinking of something along the lines of the sagas that were recorded about the German folk migrations - eg the Volsunga Saga.

Granted it would be hindered significantly by the fact that the Germans were in contact with literate cultures and the Indo-Europeans generally were not, but perhaps some distant memory filtered down through myths or fictionalized heroes like Theseus?

Is there research into trying to reconstruct proto-myths like this? It's fascinating but it would seem to be extraordinarily difficult.
