Hundreds of thousands of books were given out to the common public as rewards and wedding presents. So what happened to all of the copies? Did the government confiscate them or did everyone just kind of forget their existence? Where did they all go? I'm aware that the book was illegal to sell, but was it illegal to have? Please give me a source for any information you have, if you can. Thanks.
The book was never illegal to have, it was only illegal to sell it.
There never was a campaign to confiscate them, even the copies in libraries just stayed there, although I think with the added provision that getting it required a reason of some sort. Most copies just stayed with the owners at their discretion. It is estimated that a lot of people just threw it away but a lot of families also kept it, which is why you can find a lot of old copies in many households' attics or forgotten libraries, at least in West Germany.
