This has been touched on in previous threads here, but only briefly, with one noting a near-serious breach between the Union and the United Kingdom over the "Trent Affair", and another the absence of European opportunism during the conflict.

There are many Civil War experts here, though, so I hope you get a full answer. I'd love a full discussion of the Trent Affair, and how it affected Confederate diplomacy.
