What are jobs common in 1830s-1880s London?

by rosestar130

I'm working on an assignment [I'm in the ensemble for my school's production of Oliver!] and I have to come up with jobs that are common for the upper, working, and lower classes - 5 each. I can't find anything that sounds credible, if any at all. Do you have any idea of this?

EDIT: I totally meant 'What jobs are common' in the title. Totally mistyped it. Oops.

A good place to start looking might be the census returns from 1851 or so since they listed professions.

A place to look for this sort of information is census reports.

Matthew Woolard has written a paper going into the occupational classification in the 1881 census in detail. Appendix 5 of that paper (page 46 of the PDF) has a list of the classification by category and profession. The categories that were used are quite aligned with social class structures.

Separately, a quick google pulls up this - which appears to be a summary of some occupations with numbers from the 1851/61/71 censuses.

You should remember that the upper classes were numerically a tiny proportion of the population, so they will not be well represented in the latter table.
