The Soviet Union was not an ally of the United States during the Cold War, actually the opposite, it was its enemy. There is contention amongst historians about when and how the Cold War started, the most popular being that it started with the end of the Second World War, and the simplest explanation being the mistrust between the East and the West/ Soviets and Americans, and generally the conflicting ideologies of Capitalism and Communism
