George Wallace did. His last campaign for governor of Alabama, in 1982, had him admitting he was wrong about segregation. But he was still able to ride the Reagan Revolt against big government, and won. By then he was also quite frail, and in quite a lot of pain from being shot in the 1972 Bremer assassination attempt. Nothing like the strutting, fist-waving bully of 1964.
