I'm currently watching WWII in Colour on Netflix, and in the episode "Red Sun Rampant" they depict thousands of Japanese sailors stranded after the Battle of Midway. It seems impossible that the US ships could have captured all the stranded sailors. Was it?
The chances would have been very, very small. The primary danger to allied surface ships in doing so would have been exposure to submarine attack. They may have been willing to take that risk for the sake of fellow allied lives (and often did, and were not infrequently torpedoed for their efforts), but no such willingness to place a ship and its crew in harm's way would have existed for the sake of Japanese sailors.
