Genghis Khan is known for having over 1000 children and about 1/200 people have his y-chromosome, but did his generals also have many children? How many people are descended from 12th century Mongols?
I never understood the Y-chromosome statistic. OK so say 1/200 people have the same Y-chromosome as him. How do you know they're his descendants? Didn't Genghis get the chromosome from his father? Wouldn't Genghis' distant cousins, as long as they share the same male ancestor somewhere up the line, have the same chromosome? Do we know that this chromosome mutation started with Genghis?
