If it's an actual question, it's because "istan" as a suffix roughly translates to "land of the.." So "Afghanistan" means "Lands of the Afghans" Turkenistan "Land of the Turkmen" Uzbekistan "Land of the Uzbeks" etc.

Hiya, just FYI, you can find the origins of words ("etymology") in any good dictionary, or specialist etymology dictionaries. Here's the entry from The Online Etymology Dictionary: "-stan" simply means "country". So, similar to "-land", as in England, Ireland, Scotland, Finland, etc.

It's from the Sanskrit staana, place, possibly perpetuated via Farsi: just place, region, land of.

Our Stan chap is however named from a stony clearing or old English stanleah.
