Reading recommendations on George Washington?

by adhucvivo

Hi all. Please could somebody recommend a biography on George Washington? I'm looking for something that provides a good overview of the man's character, career and influence whilst avoiding hagiography as much as possible. Many thanks in advance.

I'm guessing that you should have posted in /r/books...

In any case, I just finished Ron Chernow's "Washington: a life", and it's fantastic. It's long, perhaps overly detailed in places, and a bit repetitive (particularly concerning Washington's moral and ethical struggles with slavery).

Otherwise, it's an excellent book that paints a compelling picture of the man, not just the legend.

Highly recommended.
