I find the The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language by David Crystal (1987) to be an excellent resource. It's affordable and an interesting read. It's in gazetteer format, so you can open it up almost anywhere for a quick read. Lots of resources.

My edition is old and ends around the beginning of home computing, but I see it has been revised since I was in high school.
