Of course, in all of the textbooks, we hear about women who worked in factories or who were nurses during World War II, but I'm curious about any jobs that women held that aren't as well known? I only just heard about Flight Nurses and the WAC, so I'm curious what other women's wartime efforts I've never heard about!
A substantial number of women helped develop the first atomic bombs — not just as secretaries and "computers," but also as scientists and technicians. I have written a bit about this here. Interesting fact: the percentage of women in technical jobs at Los Alamos during World War II was about 30%, which is 10X more (percentage-wise) than the number who worked on the Apollo program at NASA 20 years later.
