Ancient ship construction (that is, in the Greek and Roman world) used treenails, but clinker ships (a separate building tradition) often could use either wooden or iron nails. (Keep in mind that treenails and iron "nails" are really more like rivets.) The Gokstad ship, for example, uses iron fasteners for its hull, but we aren't sure exactly how representative it is of a wider tradition.
