The salient seems a legacy of the French capture (May 1675) of Dinant, retention of which would have left a still odder frontier or presumably an enclave. In the subsequent negotiations Louis agreed to exchange it for the fortress of Charlemont to the south should the Bishop of Liège refuse to cede Dinant within a year of ratification. Givet and the nearby fortress were simply lumped together in the Treaty as "the town of Charlemont" (Article 13). The handover (at least of the fortress) on the ground seems to have happened in 1680 after Dinant wasn't forthcoming in the negotiations of 1679.
