I have been told many anecdotes of early anti-religious Soviet oppression against people in Russia but how prevalent were these attacks? Were they officially documented? Were they state run? When did they cease?

I was told by family members that there were raids on homes during Leninist Russia (please excuse me if I'm using the wrong term here). They said that churches were destroyed, religious relics and icons were sold off or melted down for their gold, and priests were killed or sent to political prisons to die. Does anyone here have an expert view on these questions? Thank you in advance.
