It seems they always wear scrubs now, but in old TV shows they wear traditional white nursing uniforms. Why did the change happen and when?

It might help if you specify an area and maybe a department of healthcare - in the UK, the majority of nurses still wear a uniform. In some departments (commonly ITU), they will wear scrubs.
